View Full Version : Need advice
Hello All,
I just wanted advice to my situation. I am an alternate route candidate and in the meantime I am looking for an elementary teaching position. I have gone on 2 interviews. Can someone please tell me how does a teacher teach reading and writing to first and second graders. That has been one main question on the interview. Can you possibly refer me to a book or a very good website that would indicate this information.
Thank you for reading.

You asked a loaded question. There is no easy answer that can be given to how to teach reading and writing to first and second graders. You use every possible means necessary depending on the ability level of each individual student. You use small group instruction, large group instruction, individual instruction, read alouds, shared reading, etc... A great author to read is Jim Trelease. He has many books on read alouds. As far as an answer on how you teach reading and writing to these students...there is no one answer. What works for some will not work for others. What works in one geographic location will not always work in another geographic location. Teaching reading and writing to first and second graders is not as easy at it sounds, but it is very rewarding. I have experience teaching Kindergarten, first, second, and third grades in two different states and five different schools (each in different geographic locations). I wish there was an great answer to your question. Good luck.

Hello,
Thank you so much for your reply. You are provided very good information. In other words, I would have to implement different strategies depending upon the student and other factors.
Thank you for the author's name. I will definitely start reading his books.
I wish you the very best,
