I teach a self-contained Autistic class. I have 6 students, four of which are on an adaptive curriculum track. I am trying to use the Standard Course of Study for 2 of my higher students. Can you suggest some goals I could add for a 'Technology' goal page to include in their IEPs??? I have no idea where to start. I am sure they could learn the names of the components, but where do I start with key boarding, internet, etc?

My best guess would be to simply state that technology devices, i.e. keyboards, computer, labelmakers, communication boards, etc., will be integrated throughout the curriculum.

* Student will use an adapted pencil for writing activities.
* Student will use a name stamp to identify his/her work.
* Student will use a voice output communication device to communicate.
* Student will use a loop tape, tape recorder, and low pressure single switch to gain others' attention.
* Student will use picture sequence charts for daily activities.
* Student will use computer and text reader to read written material.
* Student will use low pressure single switch and control unit to access technology.
* Student will use picture schedule for daily routine.
Related Services:
* Daily, **** will receive instruction in the effective use of a voice output communication device during social interaction in the general education classroom.
* During the initial 6 weeks of the implementation of this plan, the team will assess the student's skills using a word predication program and adapted keyboard for written language.

I would start by identifying parts of the computer:
HARDWARE: Anything that you can touch
SOFTWARE: Anything that you can not touch
Input Devices:Mouse, Keyboard, Joystick,
Output device: Speaker, Printer, Monitor
Notice that there is an overlap, create a Venn Diagram and determine what is the commonalities.
Second Lesson: Discuss IPOS
(input, process, output, storage)
discuss the similarities of the terms and what they have in common. All of this could be a quarter of a semester of work. Create wordsearches, crossword puzzles, draw and color each item, cut and paste the groups of items together. Have students creatively illustrate other ways of looking at these devices so that they can remember them. For example, instead of drawing the computer mouse, draw a mouse with eyes, draw a monitor that looks like a television, create a printer that looks like a painter, etc. I hope this helps.
