Hi, I'm a BC high school teacher who has just been offered a contract to teach in New York City for Sept. 2005. Having heard some horror stories about schools in the Bronx, Brooklyn etc, I'm kind of hesitant to go, even though I love, love love, NYC itself.
I'd be very happy to hear from any Canadian recruits who are teaching for the NYCBOE --have your experiences been generally positive or negative and would you do it again?
Many thanks!

Well, i'm a P.E teacher and although being young have had the experiences of teaching all around the states, including New York and yes it's scary after hearing all those stories, i heard them to before working there. When i got there it wasn't so bad and the kids are really nice, as us teachers all know their not all angels but its worth trying it out. Let me know if it's good!!!

Greetings--on a related note, I have a query for you both. I am a Canadian elementary school teacher (from Calgary) and technology specialist. Due to a change in my spouse's place of employment, I find myself living in Boston. How did you find your US teaching positions? How difficult was it to find and secure them? How willing were they to sponsor your H1B? I had been given the strong impression that Canadian elementary teachers would have difficulty obtaining a work visa. Is this true? Thanks so much.

Hi All!
I represent a translation company that is seeking male canadian voices for a project in the city. If you are interested, please contact me at kcollins@transperfect.com.
Thanks!

I know that this is late, but I hope you took the job! I came to NYC from the well-to-do 'burbs and I have never been happier! If you have what it takes--you are smart and your heart is in it--then these kids will appreciate you and treat you well! If you are looking for what Hollywood has to tell you about NYC schools then go to the movies but if you want to have a fulfilling career and make a difference then come to NYC! Don't be afraid of these kids, they deserve the best and if that's you--it's meant to be!

Hi
I wonder if anyone can help me... I am UK fully trained and qualified Secondary School Teacher hoping to work in New York. I understand that I need H1b Visa and wondered if many schools offer sponsorship in New York.
Thanks

Hi Kerry-- Have you heard anything about the HIB visa requirements? I'm in your position too.

To Kerry and Co. who wish to come to NYC from the UK and teach on the primary and secondary levels.
Contact: NYCBOE at: schools@nyc.gov and inquire about the exchange program, I think it might still exist.
It is a very difficult time since the downturn in the economy and the "Teach NYC" & "Teach for America" programs have overrun us here. Principals get paid extra for every one of these teachers that get hired.
Politics as usual.
You'll have to do a lot of research on this on. I know NYC has a type of cooperating x-change program abroad
perhaps you should be looking in that direction.
You might want to look into BC, Canada and then look into opps in NYC via Canada
Good Luck with that and I'm sorry I couldn't give you better info on this.

i believe we should not have to attend schools but instead have educational classes at home so we dont have to deal with upstart yuppies from canada. no offence. but school is very overrated because the teachers and students have to miserably coexist and therefore become very irate. Rename your country Canadialand and i think we will have a deal
