View Full Version : Virtual Manipulative for Teaching Time
Hello,
Last night I finished a project I have been working on for the past two weekends and I wanted to share and gather input.
The link below is to a Flash-based, clock application I wrote for use in a computer lab setting or a classroom with a computer hooked up to a TV.
Initially, the application allows the user to manipulate a standard clock in various intervals (1 min, 5min, 10min, 15min, 30min, & 1hr). The window in the upper-right corner displays the clock's current time in digital format, while the window in the upper-left displays the clock's current time in written form ("half past three","23 minutes until nine", etc.)
The user also has the capability to change the clock's face (two primary faces, roman numerals, 12-3-6-9, and markings only).
Finally, the clock allows the user to work with concepts of elasped time (lower-left button).
Here is the URL:

If you find this application useful, please let me know. Please let me know how you are able to implement it in your classroom.
Thank you for your input.

Very cool. My school is in the process of getting us hooked up to present lessons on a big screen or t.v.--Time is really a problem for most of my students; this will be a huge help and very fun to play with and to solve the dreaded elapsed time standardized test questions together. Good work!

I think this idea is great. The uses in the classroom are numerous. I can see using this before during and after lessons to keep students abreast of how much time they need, how much time they have left, and how much time it took before introducing them to more complex problem-solving with elapsed time. These could be done in two minute are less as students master the concepts. Bravo!

I would highly recommend you submit your site to the MERLOT database at http://www.merlot.org. It is a nice utility.

I appreciate your clock project. Thanks for sharing it. I would use it on the classroom to show time remaining in the particular lesson, as well as allowing students to practice time individually in the computer lab. I also checked out the bottom of your clock page and went "Back to the Classroom". Wow, I really like the way you have organized and presented your classroom spelling and other subjects for parents and students to access. Very cool.
Thank you so much for sharing this site. I have been looking for sites to help reinforce what we are teaching in the classroom. This site not only uses the analog and digital displays, it also provides the kids with valuable information and terminology about elapsed time. I appreciate you sharing this site with us. I am sure that with more exploration, the more ideas about how to adapt it to various ages and grade levels will be generated.

Wow,
I was looking for ways to practice elasped time at the students level. While working in a resource class room, the students can be at many different levels. We will able to go to the computer lab and each student work on their own goal. I look forward to next week and will post how things went.

Nate: Thanks for a wonderful tool. It will really help me help my kids. I was confused about how to use the elapsed time component, however. Could you tell me how to use it? Thanks, Nancy iloveteaching@att.com :)

I think your Jude e-Clock program is fabulous! It engages the students and utilizes technolgy while teaching them the fundamentals of telling time in the classroom setting.

This whole site is wonderful! Really good job on the elapsed time. I have a lot of visual learners in my classroom who will benefit from this idea.
Thanks!

I just sent you an email to request permission to link to some of your great virtual math manipulatives on my own web sites. I teach second grade. It is very difficult for the students to see how the hour hand moves in respect to the minute hand. This virtual clock does a great job of showing it. Now if I can only get some time on the school Smart Board to demonstrate its use, we can start using it in class as a center. Thanks for your hard work, Nate!
