Hello,

I would like to teach math at the community college level. I have undergraduate degrees in chemistry, management information systems and accounting. I am also completing a masters in accounting in the spring. I would like to go an extra year and get a second masters in math and then seek a full time position teaching math at the community college level.

I'm wondering what the starting salary range is for 9 months and how that might compare to a Ph.D. starting salary in math. I was told the average for a Ph.D. in math was in the 50's and for the masters it was in the 40's. Does this seem reasonable?

I was also told there is a high demand for math teachers at the community college level, but all the positions I have found have been part time only. How do you find the full-time positions?

Thanks!

How can we answer your questions if we don't know where you live?

By the way, community college positions are usually highly competitive. Many, maybe even most, full-time positions are staffed by Ph.D.s (go to the college's web site and have a look for yourself). The fact that you have numerous degrees could send up a red flag to the search committee, so make sure you explain this situation in your cover letter.

But then again, it all depends on the state.

I am teaching full-time at a community college in Florida, however I am not tenured and am teaching on a temporary basis for the time being. I do have an interview next week for a tenured position, so keep your fingers crossed for me!

As for salaries, it varies greatly depending on what region you are in. In my area, with a master's degree it is generally around 42,000 for 9 months. You can pick up extra money for teaching 1 or 2 extra classes per semester and a few in the summer. I did that and made close to 60,000 last year. Of course, I also had no free time.

I've taught at the university level as well and I can highly reccommend the community college. Best of luck to you.
