Gum has always been popular . It does not help you get higher test scores. In all actuality it will distract you from taking the test because you'll be so worried on if it'll help you or not. Knowing the information will get you higher test scores. If gum does anything at all, it is solely based on the placebo effect.

Yes, gum does help you do better on tests. Take the case of Dr. Kenneth Allen, whose latest findings indicate that we should perhaps overturn one of the most sacred laws of primary education: the prohibition on chewing gum in the classroom. Allen, a professor at N.Y.U.’s College of Dentistry, is an unlikely champion of Bazooka and Double Bubble, and yet he has recently shown, if inadvertently, that a pack-a-day chewing habit may help account for the difference between the honor roll and summer school.

I am from a school that forbids gum bacause unresponsible students, put it on the floor or under the desk. Studies all over the this great nation that we live in say that gum helps you to consintrate. The shool that i go to is full of people with ADD and ADHD. Even my principal has ADD. So since gum helps you to consitrate, then i think its ok. It keeps those who have a hard time consitrating, on task.

I don't know abut everyone else, but i think chewing gum does help improve concentration and therefore your test grades. I experimented with this once and found that i had a ten percent increase in grade for an algebra quiz. I'm currently still testing for further results. Based on my results, chuwing gum does help for studying and taking tests.

Has anyone tried this make your own chewing gum educational activity kit:

Chewing gum - 1. A medium for suspending saliva on any and every surface. 2. An attempt by certain humans to become even more bovine. 3. A successful delivery system to inject sugar into dental cavities. 4. A diversion of energy from the brain to the jaw (i.e. reverse evolution).
If you're fond of wearing human saliva on a regular basis, promote gum use in places where adolescents gather en masse.

Scientist did a study conducting part of their student panel to chew gum while taking an exam, the other part of this panel to not chew gum. The scientists discovered that chewing gum relaxes the mind enough to do better on tests. I had to prove this for myself and over a period of 3 months found this discovery to be true.

I've heard it can relieve pressure in your ears as well, so maybe that has something to do with it. I'm not so sure about the "fact" that it can improve memory. I honestly believe that your memory and concentration skills of everyone, and those tested with this theory were more affected by factors such as stress; as well as just their basic learning skills that they've developed. Take for example, me. I never chew gum in school, or when taking tests, and I'm a 93% average student. I think that's because of my learning skills, and I don't think it would improve if I chewed gum in class. It might also have to do with the fact that people believe the gum can help them, so it makes them feel more confident while taking tests, allowing them(us) to not freak out as much and forget everything. Whether this illusion is a good thing, or bad thing, I don't know. I think the best way to get good grades is just to pay attention, and put a good effort into your work. Then you'll feel confident enough without thinking gum is helping you, and you'll get good grades. Why argue about this, when there's a solid way to get good marks: work hard!

Gum is a GREAT thing to have in class and it really helps your memory. The mint gum can even stimulate your brain and help you on tests or papers. Also, if a student would have gum in their mouth, they may not talk to their neighbor next to them because of chewing. If the gum is being popped or annoying, punish the person for doing it! DUH! Teachers and principals don't realize how refreshing and relaxing gum really is to a student. That is why it is sooooo popular!!! Lastily, it could break bad habits like chewing nails or eating boogers (gross anyway!) but you never know. I think that it helps tremendously and i don' tknow how all you people out there think it doesn't help but whatever you think ok!

Research has shown that chewing gum moves the vestibular system which is located near the ear. Kids with ADD and ADHD who are figgity can control some of that movement and concentrate is enhanced. As a parent of 3 sons with varying degrees of ADD/ADHD and a special education teacher....I know it works. Gum chewing, for all the wonderful properties it contains, is not a issue in my classroom. Students are not placing gum under chairs and desks....they are respectful, grateful and impressed when I lay out all the research that point to gum chewing as a benefit to learning.

as a special ed. teacher, I would have to say that chewing gum would help with concentration for many of the reasons previously listed... but here's another one to consider:
if the student is chewing gum when they are learning the material, then it helps to activate another part of the brain - this is called multi-sensory learning. (another example is writing in sand with your finger - temporary, but multi-sensory just the same).
Multi-sensory approaches tend to be more effective for long-term retention because more areas of the brain are involved in the learning process. If the gum is present during the classroom and studying process, then it should be available as a trigger during testing as well.
Just a thought! :)

Gum can cause the stomach to believe you are eating therefore it releases the chemicals to breakit down and it is said to make you fat.. plus for most people who cant multi-task, chewing gum can be a bit of a distraction. Come on, you consintrate all your energy to keep the gum in your mought, to chew it, to make sure it doesnt slide down your throat, thinking "what nice flavours these are" and making sure the teachers does not catch you, because in the school i go to, there is a fine of €6 if you are caught chewng gum.
The best way for a student to consintrate is knowing they will get something out of it. I for one am hoping to become a future Zoologist/concervationist. That i why i study and work in school, its because i will get something out of it. That is how the students should be able to consintrate. The should realise "hey wat if i cant actually sit still and not distorb the class, i will actually get somewhere in life" because if they dont, well whats the point in them coming to school. But after saying that. If a student studies the most they can and not get what they wanted, so what they tries and its up to the parents to give them the support/confidence they need to concentrate. NOT a stick of gum!!!
gum should be allowed in school

Gum is one of the wonders of the world for the brain. The act of chewing distracts one side of the brain allowing the thought process side to do it's job more efficiently. And the reason it improves memory recall is that it has olfactory stimulation involved. Scent is the largest memory recall stimulant for human beings....think of it, when you smell something unique you remember it, and when you smell it again, you are instantly transported to the date and time that you previously smelled it.
Most professors recommend that people where a specific type of cologne or perfume while studying. Then where it again on exam day to assist in recall. The same principle is true with chewing gum.

If gum chewing improves test scores then my students would all have A's instead of getting detentions that result in their scraping of gum from BENEATH and AROUND the desks.
My school's mandate is that there is to be NO gum-chewing by either students or faculty. I'm fine by that. When school let's out, I pop a piece into my mouth... because I know that I won't stick it somewhere it doesn't belong.
Try this... Tell them no penalty will come for spitting it into the trash. If you find them chewing, they get to "relieve" the desks of other's gum. Not that it'll solve the problem... its just more entertaining to say.

Anyone who says gumchewing doesn't help you do better on tests is a moron. Studies have shown that chewing gum opens up blood vessels to the brain, causing you to remember more and think at a higher rate. They did a test on a group of people. One group didn't have any chewing gum and they took a test. The other group had chewing gum and took the same test. Statistics show that 85% of the people with chewing gum remembered more and did better on the test than people without.

I think that the idea of the chewing gum helping test scores (if I remember what I read correctly) is that it helps the students by giving them an outlet for their nerves (I mean, who doesn't remember tapping on the floor with their feet or repetitively clicking their lead pencils while waiting for divine intervention during a test?). I also completely agree with the idea of priviliges and responsibility - respect is reciprocal - you get what you give in most cases.

Ok, I love gum. I chew it on a regular basis. I am also responsible enough not to stick it underdesks or spit it out on the floor etc. Sadly enough, the same cannot be said of the majority of children. I had to spend the summer, one year, freezing gum and scraping it off of desks & bookselves. It's disgusting. I think, after reading most of the arguments for and against the chewing of gum in class, that the cons outweigh the pros.

chewing gum has been proven to help raise test scores
it works by getting more oxygen to the brain
making it allow more things to be processed at one time
take me for example
i am 13 years of age and this year i did the national IQ test
i got a high IQ of 144 i cant remember the average age for that is but at school i asked my science teacher if i could conduct an experiment he agreed to let me
i was allowed to chew gum in every lesson and at home i did this for 4 weeks. i am better at remembering things and i now have an IQ score of 159. i'm not the best at sports so i choose to be brainy rather than to have brawl. it is on the internet and i sent my reasearch and findings to about 10 labs around the world and have heard back from 8 and they have said to me that i am very intelligent and i could be the next Einstein. if you have any questions please email me at candy_bay_bee@hotmail.co.uk

My personal opinion is that it would be more effective if they chewed it while studying or learning the material than on the test. However, I'm not quite to the point of letting them chew it all the time- as it does create a distraction in the classroom when students blow bubbles without thinking.
If there is a placebo effect, and students do better because they think they will do better- isn't it still a good thing?

i've ben doing a science research report on chewing gum when you're testing, and so far all the reliable sources i've found point out that chewing gum can improve test scores.
“Studies have shown that chewing gum is an easy way to help relieve stress and tension, as well as increase focus and concentration. Researchers have discovered that it stimulates certain areas of the brain, which may have a relationship to reducing tension.”
http://www.thea-blast.org/?a=a&id=476
"the action of chewing stimulates a part of the brain called the hypothalamus, which releases hormones which serve to keep us alert."

 All this discussion about chewing of gum in school. Excuse my lack of knowledge, but the last ime I checked chewing gum actually makes you more hungry, because the chewing sends signals to your stomache that food is entering so prepare to digest. Correct me if I am wrong Science teachers.
So, if you are getting more hungry, how on earth can you concentrate? I used to chew gum a lot, and stopped because it was messing me up.
How does it help with the brain?

Gum has always been popular . It does not help you get higher test scores. In all actuality it will distract you from taking the test because you'll be so worried on if it'll help you or not. Knowing the information will get you higher test scores. If gum does anything at all, it is solely based on the placebo effect.
Gum actuallly helps because it puts pressure on areas that help concentration. We use it in special situations with ADD kids. You can also use wax or chew on the end of your pen or pencil.

I'm not able to chew gum in my school either. So I'm writing a persuasive essay to my principal stating how gum affects your grade scores. I think it might have an impact, but I'm not sure! I hope it works!
I am doing a research paper on this, and I will hopefully convince my school to let us chew gum during class. This forum has been very helpful. Thank you all for your opinions.

I have read several times (In Kids magazine, and other sources) that gum does actually help you think because when you chew, your body send glucose to the brain because it thinks that you are going to eat. This is actually going to be my science fair topic, so I can prove that gum does help you think, and that schools should allow children to chew gum in class, as long as it is thrown away properly.

If you allow gum in your classroom then please do not let students pop it out loud all hour. I remember being in high school during math class and this extremely annoying girl would have gum every single day and pop it out loud every three to five seconds. It used to distract me and drive me nuts but the teacher didn't notice. I know that others around her were uncomfortable as well but no one said anything. Even if you do not care, please know that the popping of gum is extremely distracting in a class. If you allow gum in your classroom like I do, then please, for the sake of all your kids, tell them that they can have gum as long as you don't see it (blowing bubbles, etc.) or hear it (popping). Since stating these rules I do not have a problem.

First off, gum does help you concentrate and it even improves memory. For those people that want proof go to www.ThinkGum.com . There are loks of peer-reviewd scientific papers cited about how and whay chewing gum improves concentration. Most people think chewing gum improves concentration by increasing blood-flow to your brain.
Think Gum is a gum designed to enhance the brain-boosting effects that eveyone already loves about chewing gum. It is great for students and really helps many people concentrate in class.

How many sites can a person look at about the purported benefits of gum, how many ways can teachers weasel around the issue of gum chewing in their classrooms, how many "consequences" can we think of for getting caught chewing, etc., etc. It is real simple in my class-----no gum, no gum, no gum.

I found that gum helps me on my math tests. Without it my mum would kill me! I just find it relaxing knowing that Little Mr. Gummy is in my mouth helping me. Other people in my class who chew gum also get good grades, and nobody complains about bad breath. No, I'm dead serious. They used to be like "Aw, your breath reeks" and "64%, dude you ****************!" to this one kid. One day they brought in minty gum and there breath wasn't too too bad, and their test score went up from an average of 65%ish to a 80%ish. So yeah. Plus gum is fun. Too bad there's a ban at my school though, everytime we have a sub we have to spitt out our gum.

I have found that by having the student bring water, it can help a student think more clearly. I do a Brain Gym that encourages the person to drink water. When your water in your body is reduced by 2% water you are unable to do simple Math questions. Perhaps by bathing the brain with the water it will allow a student to retain more information. Then you don't have to worry about the gum issue. Most of the students I have watched, do not drink anything all day. They only drink at lunch. That is making the body dehydrated and unbable to concentrate.
Try it. It works.

I was a Lab Tecnician for almost 20 years before my wife and I decided to swap roll's (we only started having children 6 years ago). When I was a lab tecnician I use to do a lot of data mining and I mean a LOT!.
I have looked and looked and looked. All I can find that suggests that chewing gum is beneficial is located on the Wriggleys promotional website.
http://www.wrigley.com/wrigley/products/products_benefits.asp
As it is chewing gum marketing propaganda, I dont think it is to be trusted.
Though I did find this:- http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A172342
Mention has already been made of the fact that chewing gum can be an aid to concentration. One theory behind this is that the action of chewing stimulates a part of the brain called the hypothalamus, which releases hormones which serve to keep us alert.
It is only a theory, there is no solid evidence to support this claim.

You can't make a rule for the few! That is unjust... if a few people can't handle the responsibility of not sticking gum to the bottoms of desks or spitting it out on the sidewalks, then NO ONE should be chewing gum. It wouldn't be fair to let some students chew and others not. You guys are always saying how "unfair" we are but here you are trying to segregate your own student population through gum-chewing??

Asking teachers to make gum rules for the ones that can't handle the priveledge, while allowing others to chew would be like asking a cop to allow some people to speed that can handle it, and others not be able to speed.

yes it does. Because everyone wants to get a free piece. And when a kid offers one piece, the entire class is now more interested in that kid than the subject of the class.

I know that my mind wanders all the time when writing essays but when I'm chewing gum it takes away from my nervousness and boredom so I can concentrate better. OKAY gum chewing has all its side effects
gum is both good and bad for you, but in my opinion, it is worse than people think it is...
first of all, some rare studies have shown that some theories are true, but nothingless, most other theories have NOT BEEN PROOVEN YET
i agree with whoever said that gum should not be allowed in schools
reason one: MOST STUDENTS DO NOT HAVE SENSE ENOUGH TO THROW THEIR GUM IN TRASH CANS, AND STICK IT UNDER DESKS AND SPIT IT ON THE FLOOR, this takes hundreds and maybe thousands of dollars per year to clean up all that gum, which is a TOTAL waste of money, which could be spent on important stuff
reason 2: CHEWING GUM CREATES A POWERFUL ACID IN YOUR STOMACH, THAT IT USED TO BURN FOOD WHEN YOU EAT, BUT WHEN PPL CHEW GUM, YOUR BRAIN DOESNT KNOW THAT THERE IS NO FOOD GOING IN YOUR STOMACH, IN CONCLUSION, YOUR STOMACH LINE CAN BE BURNT BY THE ACID, this is ACTUALLY PROOVEN this may cause serious health problems for different kinds of people
there are so many other reasons that explain why gum chewing can be "hazourdous" to your health
in my opinion, i will chew gum anyway, even with knowing this BECASUE I AM A PERSON TOO
but it is still good to know the extreme side effects because, in a way you will be cautious wen thinking to chew gum

ADD is just an excuse for poor behavior.
no its not. if that was the case, then why would so many medical studies confirm it?? i happen to know someone who has ADD and its not just an excuse. he takes medicine and is getting better. that wouldn't happen if it was just an excuse. and that "i stayed at a holiday inn express last night" is SO overused if you ask me.

OKAY gum chewing has all its side effects
gum is both good and bad for you, but in my opinion, it is worse than people think it is...
first of all, some rare studies have shown that some theories are true, but nothingless, most other theories have NOT BEEN PROOVEN YET
i agree with whoever said that gum should not be allowed in schools
reason one: MOST STUDENTS DO NOT HAVE SENSE ENOUGH TO THROW THEIR GUM IN TRASH CANS, AND STICK IT UNDER DESKS AND SPIT IT ON THE FLOOR, this takes hundreds and maybe thousands of dollars per year to clean up all that gum, which is a TOTAL waste of money, which could be spent on important stuff
reason 2: CHEWING GUM CREATES A POWERFUL ACID IN YOUR STOMACH, THAT IT USED TO BURN FOOD WHEN YOU EAT, BUT WHEN PPL CHEW GUM, YOUR BRAIN DOESNT KNOW THAT THERE IS NO FOOD GOING IN YOUR STOMACH, IN CONCLUSION, YOUR STOMACH LINE CAN BE BURNT BY THE ACID, this is ACTUALLY PROOVEN this may cause serious health problems for different kinds of people
there are so many other reasons that explain why gum chewing can be "hazourdous" to your health
in my opinion, i will chew gum anyway, even with knowing this BECASUE I AM A PERSON TOO
but it is still good to know the extreme side effects because, in a way you will be cautious wen thinking to chew gum
ok what exactly do you mean that theories have not been proven? there have been actual scientists who have done experimentation and proven this in fact true. if you don't believe me, follow this link.

I find it fascinating how teachers say the cons out weigh the pros. There is overwhelming evidence that the gum helps with students’ concentration and test sores (see other posts for links to research). The cons being that the teachers have to clean the desks, or get students to do it during detention. I had previously thought that a teacher’s number one priority was to teach the students as much as possible as effectively as possible. Apparently to some it is instead to do the governments requirements as easily as possible for themselves. For teachers who allow gum in their classrooms because they aren’t afraid to go the extra mile to make sure their students get the best education I salute you. To the teachers who follow simply worry about what extra work they have to do, may your students have fun torturing you in your own room. For when you take away things from children they revolt. The situation becomes and us against them. They will make your job much harder then taking gum off a few desks.
Basically
Kids chew gum=happy, better learning potential, nicer to teacher
No gum for kids=mad, worse at school, lack of interest because of poor performance, resentment for teachers due to their involvement in the restriction of gum
So in conclusion
Give ‘em Gum

Gum DOES help students with school. It helps your memory. It has been tested and when you chew gum your heart rate speed up ever so slightly and that sends extra oxygen to your brain and therefor you have a better time remembering things. I know that it may be a distraction but if so than take the privalage away from that individual student and not all of them! It takes away a great way of helpig with grades and is not fair to the other students.

i addition to that (same person) gum can be hazardous in ways so instead of taking the privilage way alltogether just limit it! for example. Only let them use it during tests and make sure they throw it in the trash. At leat let them use it a reasonable times.

you are so smart aren't you, funny thing is, your wrong. sure, deadly toxins in "sugar free gum" are poison, if the gum isn't sugar free than its fine, because guess what. there is sugar in it, not splenda. so it isnt most gum. just sugar free gum. in addition to that they also make candy out of that poisonous sweetener so you kinda lose with that argument. unless of course you meant that they wouldn't stick the candy on the desks or anything. in which case you would still be wrong because kids would get bored of the candy take it out and place it somewhere, and it wouldn't just stick down, it would cement to the desk top

Maybe teachers wouldn't be so "rude" to students if the students weren't so rude to them. If you want respect, then you need to show some first. And don't say the teacher needs to show respect to the student because respect shown from a teacher toward a student does not look the same as the respect a student needs to show. It's the same as a boss/worker relationship - you show respect to your boss by doing what they tell you to do and doing it to the best of your ability and they show you respect by being fair and being willing to take your comments and thoughts into consideration. That doesn't mean they will follow them, but just that they will listen. As for the gum thing - if you (the collective "you", meaning students) could handle the responsibility that comes with chewing gum, then I'd be willing to bet you wouldn't have any issues at all in being allowed to chew it.

Our school actually put this theory to the test! The English teachers (4) agreed to "let" students chew gum in their classes for 3 weeks. The result? It didn't last a week! ALL the teachers were complaining about gum chewing (the students couldn't seem to "remember" to throw it away when they left the English class) AND we received an email from guess who? The maintenance supervisor--which basically said that gum was suddenly appearing "everywhere," under desks, in the carpet, on the tile in the halls, on walls, and in the football field turf (the ultimate crime) and to please help them get control of this problem. What I personally observed was 1) a lot more kids chewing gum, and 2) those kids were a lot less mannerly about chewing it (blowing bubbles, stretching it between their teeth, noisy chewing, etc). I didn't mind gum BEFORE the so-called experiment but I definitely have an issue with it NOW!

Most of my students had had gym class before my American History class. As a individual, I knew I WAS very hungry and felt physically weak and thought perhaps the students are suffering from low bloodsugar levels. I waviered the no snack and food policy, and required a very clean policy during snacking or the new policy would be revoked. Once the change was in place, I noticed bad attitudes were defunked, smiles replaced frowns, and student-to-student and student-to-teacher coorperation soared and so did grades! Students begged the principal to hire me full time. Of course, I had no idea this was happening [I was told about this later.] Scientifically, these students' bloodsugar levels were dropping and with that it is impossible for brain functioning to be optimal for learning and cooperation. Belligerance is a dangerous symptom of extremely low bloodsugar levels and some students had actuallyfainted in my class!

Can chewing gum improve memory?
Chewing gum can improve memory, say UK psychologists.
They found that people who chewed throughout tests of both long-term and short-term memory produced significantly better scores than people who did not.
But gum-chewing did not boost memory-linked reaction times, used as a measure of attention.
"These results provide the first evidence that chewing gum can improve long-term and working memory," says Andrew Scholey of the University of Northumbria in Newcastle, UK.
"There are a number of potential explanations - but they are all very speculative."
One third of the 75 adults tested chewed gum during the 20-minute battery of memory and attention tests.
One third mimicked chewing movements, and the remainder did not chew.
The gum-chewers' scores were 24 per cent higher than the controls' on tests of immediate word recall, and 36 per cent higher on tests of delayed word recall.
They were also more accurate on tests of spatial working memory.
"The findings are intriguing, although it is clear that questions remain to be addressed," says Kim Graham of the Medical Research Council's Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit in Cambridge, UK. "In particular: what is the mechanism by which chewing improves memory?"
Chewing it over
There are three main potential explanations, says Scholey.
In March 2000, Japanese researchers showed that brain activity in the hippocampus, an area important for memory, increases while people chew - but it is not clear why.
Recent research has also found that insulin receptors in the hippocampus may be involved in memory.
"Insulin mops up glucose in the bloodstream and chewing causes the release of insulin, because the body is expecting food.
If insulin receptors in the brain are involved in memory, we may have an insulin-mediated mechanism explaining our findings - but that is very, very speculative," Scholey says.
But there could be a simpler answer.
"One interesting thing we saw in our study was that chewing increased heart rate. Anything that improves delivery of things like oxygen in the brain, such as an increased heart rate, is a potential cognitive enhancer to some degree," he says.
But a thorough explanation for the findings will have to account for why some aspects of memory improved but others did not, Graham says.
She points out that gum-chewers' ability to quickly decide whether complex images matched images they had previously been shown was no better than the controls'.
Scholey presented his research at the annual meeting of the British Psychological Society in Blackpool, Lancashire, UK.

Chew your way to a better brain
Chewing any type of gum stimulates brain activity
Chewing gum may help to make people smarter by improving memory and brain performance, research suggests.
In tests, scientists found the ability to recall remembered words improved by 35% among people who chewed gum.
However, contrary to popular belief, they say it does not aid concentration.
The scientists from the University of Northumbria, in Newcastle upon Tyne, cannot explain why memory is affected, but are working on two theories.
Maybe evolution provided this mechanism for completely different reasons and this rather bizarre habit of chewing gum is tapping into them
Dr Andrew Scholey, psychologist
One is that chewing raises the heart beat, which causes more oxygen and nutrients to be pumped into the brain.
The other is that it triggers the production of insulin, which stimulates a part of the brain involved in memory.
Dr Andrew Scholey, who carried out the study, said: "When you chew, the body releases insulin, which is probably a conditioned response that occurs in anticipation of a meal.
"We know the brain contains receptors for insulin, molecular docking points that bind onto the insulin molecule.
"Although their function isn't well-known, we know they are fairly densely packed in the hippocampus which is crucial for memory."
Three groups of 25 volunteers took part in the study and were divided into non, real and "sham" chewers .
Imaginary gum
One group chewed gum, a second group sat in a quiet room without chewing, while a third "sham" group was asked to pretend to chew with nothing in their mouths.
Prior to undergoing the 25-minute test, the two chewing groups spent three minutes working their real or imaginary gum around their mouths.
The tests included questions relating to short-term memory, such as recalling words and pictures, and so-called working memory, for example the ability to retain a person's telephone number.
He said the heart rate of the real chewers after the tests was three beats per minute faster than the non-chewers, and 1.5 beats per minute faster than the "sham" chewers.
The "sham" group generally performed better than the "quiet room" group.
Dr Scholey said working memory was also significantly improved by chewing, but not to the same extent as long-term memory.
Everyday life
Trying to assess why chewing has such an impact on the human body may be in our genes, says Dr Scholey.
He said: "Maybe evolution provided this mechanism for completely different reasons and this rather bizarre habit of chewing gum is tapping into them."
The team is now looking to see whether chewing gum has an impact on memory in every day life.
The researchers are testing people's ability to put names to faces and remember shopping lists and tasks that have to be done.
Some campaigners are concerned that certain types of chewing gum contain the artificial sweeter aspartame, which has been linked to brain conditions.

If you drink coffee while studying, drink a cup right before a test. If you smoke, have a cigarette prior. If you chew gum, chew gum. Worked for me and many others in college. I also found this to work well as a staff nurse in hospital. If I was having a busy night, with high patient acuity and little time to waste prioritizing a quick cup of tea or stick of gum did help me regain the organization skills that chaos can interfer with.

I agree, if a kid needs a cigarette to calm his nerves before a test, I see no harm in that .

Children should not be engaging in pseudoscience:
Tucha et al. (2004) not only failed to reproduce improvements on cognitive function, but suggested that gum can actually have adverse effects on cognition:
“The results showed that the chewing of gum did not improve participants’ memory functions. Furthermore, chewing may differentially affect specific aspects of attention. While sustained attention was improved by the chewing of gum, alertness and flexibility were adversely affected by chewing. In conclusion, claims that the chewing of gum improves cognition should be viewed with caution.”
Tucha, O., Mecklinger, L., Maier, K., et al. (2004). Chewing gum differentially affects aspects of attention in healthy subjects. Appetite, 42(3), 327-329.
Does this show chewing gum definitively does not help? No -- but what it does is indicate it's an open question, and any effect size is probably not large.

Chewing gum makes you more alert. As long as your not smacking you chops and blowing bubbles it should not distract anyone. It brings alertness to the person whom is chewing the gum which makes you more aware the questions and answers that you are putting down. Which is why the military chews it. The movemet of you jaw alone is enought to keep you awake. As long as the student has studied the will score better.

Gum does too help on tests. at my school, you're not able to have gum. the only reason you're not allowed to have gum, is because people are so scared of getting caught, so they put it all over! i have it ALL theeee time! and i do think it helps, one time, i had a science test, and that morning my mom went to get me gum, and i got an a+, my mom was soooo exicted! because normally i'm not an A student, so the next test, i didn't have any gum, and i got a C. GUM DOES HELP(:

yes they do because gum does help improve memory. They really shouldn't ban it from schools because it helps relax students before tests and it also helps us remember things better. I chew it on every test and i normally get A's. I go to a magnet school I'm an A-B student, soon to be strait A. Gum helps me focus and relax during tests.

Ok, maybe for some students, but not for all. Quite frankly I believe it's a litttle bit of a long shot to say it's going to say improve a students tests. I mean It seems to me just another way for the teacher's, student's, and parent's not to take responsibilty for the conquences. Next thing you know some parent will sue a school because they didn't allow there child to have gum while taking the PSSA's. Come on people, lets get back to basics shall we?????

how does gum help you get higher test scores and why is it so populare
Chewing gum does not "literally" get you higher test scores. The idea behind chewing gum is to relax the test taker; to relieve tension. When I was in high school (45 years ago) our typing teacher always gave us gum to chew during class because she said, "it saved wear and tear on her typewriters." The purpose of the gum is to relax the student and hopefully relieve some anxiety and in turn maybe help improve test scores.

We had our science fair today and one of my students decided to test if gum really helps. Turns out, not only does it help with memorizing things but it also makes students preform better on math tests, even if they didn't have gum while studying.

As a Technology Education Teacher at a Middle School with students trying to prove that gum chewing is good, I can understand how some of the arguments could be valid, but I have not seen any good evidence from this blog that would convince me to make the switch in my classroom. Where is the proof? Where is the evidence? Give me a link to the "scientific studies". As soon as this evidence exists, from at least 3 reputable sources stating the same information, then my students can e-mail me this link again and I will reconsider the switch.
Thanks for the thought ts!

Chewing stimulates our brain. It pumps our brain when we chew the gum. It keeps us active and smarter. It improves our memory power and concentration power. Students who have the habit of chewing gum will be talented in mathematics. When we chew the movement we do produces oxygen to our brain. An experiment also done about this topic in http://www.brainhealthandpuzzles.com/chewing_gum_stimulates_the_brain.html
If you wish please visit this site and get more information about it.

No assistance with spelling though? Guess not!!!

[QUOTE=Unregistered;2223]The less you nag kids about something, the fewer issues you will have. I allow my students to have snacks/drinks/gum in my class with the understanding that if trash is left on the floor, desks, classroom, anywhere other than the garbage can, the privilege will be revoked. I am an English teacher and anal about the care of my personal classroom library books. I have not had a single issue with this. My students are very attentive and hard-working. The ones that are failing usually do not have food with them anyway. Gum isn't an issue at all for me. I have never found it under desks, on the floor, etc. I don't really even notice kids chewing it. I find that if I don't walk around forcing kids to throw out their gum, they don't tend to defy me in that way...[/QUOete
I agree, i do the same with my students and never have i had a problem with them about chewing gum.

This is not the time to follow age old customs, though I have never tried this but don’t see any problem in allowing the students to chew during class, if it increases their concentration.
