Is anyone familar with this activity? I want to do it for a grade 6 class based on a story. The idea is that I read a story and choose approx. 15 words that will fit into the catergories: Characters, Setting, Problem, Outcome and Unknown Words. The students will put the words that they think fit into each catergory which also relate to the sequence of the story from beginning to end. They will also write a "gist statement" which is a one sentence summary explaining what they think the story is bout. They will also write "Questions to Discover" about what they want to find the answers to in the story, what doesn't make sense.
I will give them all charts with the headings and boxes to fill in these words/sentences.
Has anyone ever done something like this before? If I type up the short story would anyone be willing to help me choose some good words, that are challenging but still allow the students to make some sense of the sequence of the story?
