Could anyone help me with ideas on how to test the reading ability of a student with cerebral palsy and speech that is difficult to understand.

Have you tried asking questions about a story? Use yes/no responsives or icons. The yes/no may be a nodor shift of ey gaze. You can also use icons to see if you get correct answers.

If comprehension questions are aiming a bit high, you could check recognition of high frequency words and letter-sound correspondence.
Possible methods of answering are:
* using a physical display and having the student point to an answer following a verbal question
* selecting an answer using a switch in Clicker 5, or similar program
* selecting an answer using an AAC device
