One of my students was held back as a primary student. During his second year of the same grade, the school realized he had learning disabilities and was given special services.
Now that he is in my class, the parents will not let him receive any specialized services. They say, he repeated, he should be fine now. Ther are also upset that he was held back in the first place. They are very upset with our school. Any suggestions?

You should have a team meeting with the principal, the other support services that this students warrants along with the parents. The parents should be informed of why their child needs these other services from the other teachers as well as yourself. Keep daily notes, classwork, homework and any feedback from special areas teachers, so you can have information in a variety of areas about this student. Most importantly explain to the parents that you are on their side (you want the child to succeed) and that you are able to understand their feelings. You may have to give a little to get a little. In other words, give the parents a timeframe of when you will meet again to discuss the progress of the student. Give concrete expectations of where the child should be the next time you meet with the parents. Before you meet with the parents make sure everyone involved in this meeting is on the same page. During this meeting make the parents feel comfortable & explain why there is a team of teachers there and why the students requires different/ more services even though the student was retained.
Good Luck!!! Please keep me posted.

I appreciate the insight on the parent situation on the 2nd thread. I am disturbed by the last thread as it has nothing to do with my post. This is when religion has gone too far and gives it a bad name. Leave my posts alone and go to a religious website. This one is for teachers!

everybody thinks that if a student fails, they are SPED. Sounds to me like the school wants the extra $$ associated with getting another kid labeled when the reason the kid may have failed is because
1. non-compliance
2. not having a background (not knowing basic letters or phonics when entering Kindergarden)
Bottom line, if I don't think my child is SPED, I'll be damned if you are going to label them that way to meet your quota.
Congrats on these parents actually standing up for the best interest of their child, and not supporting a SPED label simply because it was the school's agenda.
