My education includes BS Computer Science (2002) and AS Mathematics (1998). Most of my work history involves software design and sales. However, I decided to teach math at a business college a couple years ago. After teaching two terms of college algebra during evening sessions, I enjoyed it enough to consider doing it as a career.

1. Having trouble deciding whether to teach 7-12 level or (community) college level. I know the demand for 7-12 is very high here in CA. Teaching adults was easy, but teenagers are a different world. What specific things should I consider before proceeding?

2. I have a strong math foundation with an associates degree and engineering undergraduate major, but should I still consider getting a higher degree in math? Would it be wise to consider simply taking the appropriate competency tests?

Any input would be appreciated. I've just begun exploring this option and I want to learn as much as possible as I go. Thanks!

I have found the 11th and 12th graders the easiest group age to work with. With younger students it's a whole different experience because it takes more effort to get them fully engaged. With your strong foundation in math I would definitely recommend 11th or 12th grade AP level math as you would enjoy a new career while learning new things.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the feedback. I'm definitely leaning toward the more mature student, as I'd rather focus my energy on subject matter than manage behavior :)
