Many students in society today focus everything on their report card and on one grade. Students miss their improvements and success if they do not receive the grade they wanted. As educators we need to help students realize there is so much more to learning then just the letter grade on the report card.

Where to start?

Teachers need to start explaining grades and accomplishments at the start of every school year and continue until the last day of class. Students need to understand how to measure their success in class without basing it solely on the grade. As teachers we need to encourage students to always try their best but help them understand that it is okay to make mistakes. Many students do not pay attention to their daily achievements in class because they are so worried about the final grade. Teachers should start each year by helping students set goals and help them understand how to achieve these goals. It is important to realize not every child has the same goal, and each student will succeed differently.

On going encouragement.

Students need to be encouraged everyday from the little things to success on tests. Many students tend to only focus on the test or the quiz and they miss their success on a daily basis. Students need to realize when their understanding increases they have succeed in learning. It is also a success if they receive fewer incorrect answers or have fewer mistakes on their daily homework. Educators need to help students not only concentrate on the final grades but on their growth the entire year. The best educators are the ones who really get to know their students and can help them set reachable goals for themselves. A great way to encourage students is to help them set reachable goals for every test or quiz or even just the day-to-day homework. It is discouraging to students if they set their goals too high to reach. It may damage their self esteem if they feel they have failed at their goal. If a D student wants to be an A student it is not going to happen overnight. This student should strive to be a C student then a B student and they will eventually reach their all time goal and be an A student. Encouragement from their teacher and parent can help make any student successful.

There is more there than just a grade

When it is time for progress reports or report cards it is important to show students all that they have achieved. Point out to students that their grades have steadily been improving or that their homework is always turned in on time. Many students have to work very hard to earn good grades in their classes. They need to be proud of all they have accomplished even if the grade is not where they would like it to be. Educators need to work on emphasizing the progress made in class. Many students have test anxiety or simply stress from school and sports. A student’s stress affects students’ abilities in class. If educators can help students realize that the final grade is not the only grade that matters it will reduce the stress of the tests and quizzes and may help students be more successful.

If grade are accurate then they should reflect on-going achievement. Maybe thjere is a flaw in your grading system?
