I have a mapping/mapping characteristics unit I need to teach at the beginning of the year. We do not have text books that are kid readable. Any good ideas how to structure this unit. I need to incorporate things like cardinal directions, longitude/latitude, map key, map scale...

We do not use textbooks to teach map skills in the different Elementary grades, but we have a couple of great teacher resource books that do the trick, and have photocopiable activities to go along with the easy to use lessons.
