I would like to integrate a poem of the week and have it be a writing center, copy it over. I think this will help because I was unable to include a poetry unit last year and need to have a fun way to practice handwriting. I teach 4th and 5th grade. Does anyone have any good ideas of how to find good kid poems, or poems oriented to kids to use?

I use Shel Silverstein poems. The kiddos love them. He has books and books of poems. I also do a poem a week, we write it, illustrate it, and practice saying it with a partner.

Why don't you have them create their own poems. This site has a huge library of poetry forms. The students fill in the blank and then click on the create button. Then the students can use their own poems for handwriting. :)

INSTANT POETRY FORMAT POEMS:
It sometimes helps to introduce students to poetry writing
if they can create within the parameters of a format. This
site offers all kinds of poetry formats, along with short
lesson ideas to accompany the forms.

Two or three years ago, I was looking for good children's poems. Frankly, I'm TIRED of goofy poems about homework and snot. I LOVE the classics, and in particular the classic poets (****************inson and Wordsworth, not Homer). I bought a few old, used books on Amazon and went through them to find the gems I've used. It is worth it.

I like to use Shel Silverstein. I started using them at the end of last school year. The students enjoyed learning and reciting them. Sometimes I let them add their own FLAVA to the poem for musical enjoyment. They love it!

Hello, I did this with my 4th grade students and we used Shel Silverstein poetry. The poems are entertaining and there are so many to chose from.

Try using Shel Silverstein poetry. I did something similar with my 4th grades students and they enjoyed the poems.

I use poems for my spelling each week and a cloze activity for the test, plus some other lang. arts we use with the poem. There is a website on Yahoo the is called Spellingpoetry. Check it out. I've been amazed at the way the students have taken to it. (I have third graders) Sue

I just attended a workshop where the speaker was the head of the literacy department ( I think ) at Kent UNiversity. He is a big endorser of fluency. He addressed this topic of where to get poems. He stated do not think this silly but for some reason we have neglected the nursery mOther Goose rhymes as well as words to song titles. He said students could read them, write them, put them to music but definitely should include them. He also said use materials such as the preamble to the constitution, Martin Luther KIngs address, quotes by famous Americans. NOt just poems.

The year i did poetry for fluency in my room. We read a poem every day for a week in many different ways. I used seasonal poems, poems about nature, silly poems. words from songs, and any other poems i could get my hands on.

At the end of the year my students wrote Diamante poems, cinquains, and several other poems with special formats.

The children loved it and actually made great progress in reading. IF i decide to do this again this year i will use the write the poem idea for cursive handwriting and have them keep a notebook. I will also encourage the students to write a poem of thier own and include. Thanks for your ideas.
