This upcoming year of students that i will have i have been told are very accelerated students. They need to be challenged and the parents request it. Does any one have any great ideas, websites, newletters, monthly ideas, anything that i can use to meet the needs of these children?

There are many great idea books available. Three that are especially good are Doing The Days, Getting the Most From Literature Circles, and Community Problem Solving (from the Future Problem Solving Program) I have just moved from High School English back to Elementary Gifted, so I am searching the files and resources of the former teachers. Be sure to use Bloom's Taxonomy to guide you in your lessons so that you are teaching to a higher level of thinking and processing information. Good Luck!

This is my second year working with gifted students. Last year I had a fantastic group of kids. Give them a task and they will achieve their goals. I taught my students how to use powerpoint on the computer. I also gave them a chance to write and act out a play for the other fifth grade classes. You need to find out what type of learners they are and appeal to that, individually. Give them a chance to be part of their own learning. Break away rom the norm as much as youcan and still stay within your standards and curriculum.

You could also set the kids on an independent project. For example, find out what they are interested in. Go through what they know, want to know (and lastly, when they're done, what they learned). Use what they want to know to guide you in developing an independent study for them. I have a student interested in Veterinary medicine. I hooked up an opportunity for her to go to a vet in the community and take pictures of an operation and interview the vet. She is now putting together a Power Point presentation about her experience and she will be presenting it to the class. This nails her Language Arts and technology objectives and keeps her very interested in something engaging to her. Good luck! (from a grade 4 teacher in Canada)

Lots of teachers have found the Surfnetkids Internet Enrichment handouts useful for gifted students.
