Penguins are a great unit. You can use height, weight, make a graph with these, find out what they eat, how they take care of their eggs and chicks, mapping-where they live, make a kwl chart, make a comparison diagram between the emperor-largest and little blue-smallest, Read Mr. Popper's Penguins for a literature tie in, discuss what could and could not happen, prediction, also Tacky is a great penguin and many non-fiction books are available that 2nd graders can read. There are many websites with penguins-Penguins Around the World and Penguin Planet are great. Hope this helps. I do penguins every January to introduce how to take notes and use nonfiction facts. They can only answer the questions with brief facts and then have to write their info in a complete sentence.
