Hi!!

I was wondering if you could please post some ideas for making esl resources for a grade prep student. He can't speak English (only a few words) although he can understand English at an ok level. I am a 1st yr student teacher and have been put in charge of making esl resources specifically for the student and to tutor him weekly. Any ideas would be wonderful & so helpful!!

Thanks so much :-)

Look on the Internet for great websites for ESL learners. Anything you do to engage this student in language will work. I taught non-English speakers for many years in Texas. Find some board games and interactive Internet sites such as PBSkids.org. Here are some more sites I have used in the past.

I notice you didn't say what his native language is. My neighbor is Finniish and she is bothered by schools that focus so much on Spanish rather than just trying to teach English to everyone. Anyway, here is a site which has the Dolch books, activities, and lessons. Some of the books don't show the ages of the characters e.g. animal stories so they can be used for any age.

If readers know their 220 Dolch words and 95 nouns, they will know 50% to 75% of the words in any K-3 grade book. The site has books of idioms and a online verb conjugator for many languages. It also has children's books in English and Spanish as well as some Dolch words translated into Spanish.
