HotPotatoes is free for educators. Available at http://web.uvic.ca/hrd/halfbaked/

You can create interactive multiple-choice, short-answer, jumbled-sentence, crossword, matching/ordering and gap-fill exercises. These can also be printed.

Discovery has a lot of teacher resources, including worksheet templates that you fill in.

The "Hot potatoes" software or similar is used at Quia.com. (http://www.quia.com/servlets/quia.web.QuiaWebManager) What I like is that after you set up your classes, there is a log for all student activity for the activities that you create in the format of a quiz, (Quia quiz session). I assign one a week as homework. The activity is self-graded; all I have to do is copy the scores in the grade program.

I use pen and paper. It does not look as professional, but it is faster and targets the same learning objectives.

That makes sense-but I work in a district that uses Balanced Literacy, so we don't have any textbooks.
