Hi! I need help with a fun lesson for 6th grade on Main Idea and Supporting Details! I was asked to do a demo lesson for this on Tuesday and I have no idea how to make it fun and interesting for these students that I do not know! Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

The main idea is the top of the umbrella. The details are the little metal spokes that hold it up. Have the kids make umbrellas. Model, model, model. I suppose you could use other things other than an umbrella - animal's body for the main idea and the legs for supporting details.

a great lesson on main idea and details is to have the students write directions for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on index cards. Quickly collect the cards and then have bread peanut butter and jelly available. Ask for volunteers to come up and follow the directions on the cards. You will notice that Most of the children will not write to open the jars or scoop out the jelly with a knife, they are to follow the cards so if it says to put the peanut butter on the bread they have to put the whole jar on it. They love this and can really see how important little details are. Be careful about peanut allergies you can always substitute marshmellow fluff and jelly.
