I'm a college student researching the techniques to use with families who have disabled children. Are there any teachers out there who can explain to me how to go about talking and working with the parents of what could be my disabled students someday? Please write to me with your experiences and advice at lamya_benlitifah@yahoo.com. PLEASE DONT HESITATE TO WRITE! Thank you!!

Treat parents of disabled students the same way you treat any parent. Make a point of calling and discussing their child's academic needs before you call and ask for behavioral support. Parents are more likely to back you up if they know that you are focused on their child's education. Call more often than you think is necessary. If there is a problem parents usually will not call you until they have become frustrated. Look for skills the child needs to learn to give you something to discuss on the cold call . Make the phone call while looking at your grade book and work samples-parents are more likely to trust your judgment if you have numbers to give them. Also, call all parents after the first of school so that you can find out which parents have working phone numbers. You can use discussing their child's first day as an excuse for the call.
