What are some good tools for peer learning in classrooms?

I'm currently working on a project for an alternative school system in Bangladesh and they have a serious shortage of teachers. We're trying to develop some kind of product so that the kids would learn without the teachers undivided attention.

Are there somethings you use in class when you have to step out or divide the class in to separate groups?

you could always do group projects, where each student knew their role and what to do. you could assign a role play where students have to research what their character would do and say. give the kids a problem that they need to work on together to solve. all the kids could contribute based on their individual prior knowledge of the problem. the kids would be learning from each other. assign books to read with different kids reading different parts. have them answer questions on the book together. use higher order thinking skills and questions where the students would have to work together to come up with the answer.
