I am a student at East Carolina Univeristy and I am beginning a practicum for 5th grade. My assignment is to teach Government. Are there any ideas our there from experienced teachers as to how to teach poltical parties and the voting process? Activities would be great!

Why not have the kids act out the process? Create a mock congress. Create a funny bill and teaching them the process of passing it. Then have them create rules for the classroom. Of course you will have to act as president, so they don't try to pass crazy rules for your class.

Whenever a campaign is on, let the students study the issues. Then allow the children to write to whichever candidate they want (or both). So far I have always gotten responses back, which thrills the students. I even got a personal invitation to Jimmy Carter's inauguaration! I went and took lots of pictures for the kids to see.

Go to www.unitstudies.com There is an awesome computer active unit study on there. It has lots of awesome activities and websites to visit. Everything you need is there. It is very reasonable too!

Schoolhouse Rock has a great collections of songs and cartoon shorts on all manner of subjects, but their government titles are especially good. CD, DVD, and CD ROM are available, and reasonably priced. Ask someone who was a kid in the seventies about them, and they'll probably be able to sing you the preamble...

I have kids review the main issues and what each party supports.
