Go to www.merlot.org and peruse the Social Science library for interactive applets, movies, and tutorials.

Does anyone have a description/outline or idea for a state research project in a mixed-grade h.s. U.S. geography class? I had them pick a state, and they are in the process of composing letters asking for brochures, pictures, websites, etc. to glean info from.

Visit this link http://memory.loc.gov/learn/collections/ccindex.html.

Every subject listed on the page has a link on how to incorporate US history, criticial thinking, and art & humanities into your lesson. There are also links to primary sources on the web.

Good luck!

not only does it enhance your lecture/discussion...

but you can have a lot of fun with it... link to websites, and you get points for using technology...

i'm also assuming you can get a projector...

email me through my site (http://USHistorySite.com) above and i'd be happy to give you some lesson plans you can use in a computer lab or share some of my powerpoints.

<don't want my email public.. but the form on the site comes right to me>

www.archive.org has an extensive archive of old movies, war footage, public service announcements, ect... It's a great resource.

I guess your possibilities depend on what technology you have available. I've seen SmartBoards work well in Social Studies classes (for example, identifying elements in a political cartoon).

http://www.unitedstreaming.com

If your school, or school division has a membership, this is the best site ever. Most of the videos have activities that go with them (blackline masters and teacher's guides). You can chose to view only segments of videos or download the whole thing.

http://www.brainpop.com is another good site if your school has a membership.

I also like to use interactive games (type in some topic and interactive games in google and you'll find great stuff). As well as power points and you can find a lot of great ones online. I like to download them, save them and make changes to them so that they fit my lecture and my teaching style.

Is there a reason that you want to use technology? All to often technology is used for the sake of using technology rather than actually improving student learning. At best, web-sites provide information that could be more easily accessed through books (no time lost hooking up wires). At worst, computer games tend to emphasize lower level knowledge. Using software like Power Point, Publisher, or Front Page seem like a good way to high-tech research projects until you realize that you are spending more time teaching computer skills than Social Studies.

Technology is meant to be a tool to make life easier-not as a hoop to be jumped through. Until there is an actual reason to use a tool you shouldn't. Now I have a question:How do you implement shovels into a social studies class for High School students?

I agree, just because I have a hammer, doesn't mean I should use it to change a flat tire

Sounds like an admin mandate to me.....

Good point. So, tell the admin. that technology is defined as a tool that helps you to complete a task. Bring a dictionary if you need to. This should open it up to using more effective tools-like pencils.

Hi,
The social studies teachers know the history of the country. They have to be prepared so much to teach small children.
