I am teaching a grades 3-5 combined classroom, and developing my own science materials is becoming overwhelming. I want to teach 4 or 5 units a year on a 3 year rotating schedule so that I can teach the three grades together. Are there any textbooks or materials out there set up this way? It seems that everything set up in units is for grades 6 and up. Any help would be appreciated.

What State are you from, this makes a big difference in my response.

I teach in Ohio, but in a private school, so a lot of the state regulations don't necessarily apply. I still conform to the state standards in my classroom, but I do have some flexibility.

You will learn that it is best to create your own units.

I teach a 4-5 combination and a 7-8 combination for science. It gets really chanllenging at times. I have found that Teacher Created Materials are thematic units that are based on multi-level intelligences. They have a web site www.teachercreated.com. Search on what every you are teaching. Books run about $8-9 apiece. For example I did a unit on chocolate and their thematic book on chocolate was great! I also like their units for the holidays. The one for Thanksgiving is really nice. Good Luck!

Try the AIMS units. Most units are both fun and challenging. Some units can usually be adapted to different grades and cover both Math and Science. You can download some older FREE units from there site. Try to get your district to order the catalogs also.

I maintain an elementary school web site. You might find the science units identified on this page
