There are many arguments to suggest that homework has a negative impact on students, while there are others who say that homework helps to develop student's planning, organization and time management skills etc.

So what amount of homework should students be given?

I feel that the value of homework really depends upon the support students receive at home. If there is little support, homework is useless. If there is ample support, homework is very rewarding for students.

Hi,

Homework is one of the most misunderstood aspects of teaching.

Homwework can and should be an extremely effective tool for reinforcing previously learned material.

Homework should never be used to teach new material. Your class is not a corespondence course :)

Homework should be a fairly short assignement that simply reinforces what was taught that day, or previous days.

And, homework can also be creative, and dare I say, even fun.

For example, I teach 8th grade social studies. Today we are studying the effects of industrialsm during the early 1900s and specifically the relationship between Labor and Management. For homework, the students are to write a dialogue between a factory worker and a factory owner. The dialogue can be creative but they must include key terms they learned from today's lesson such as strike, boycott, labor union, etc.

Tomorrow the students will pair up and act out their dialogue in front of the class.

There are many ways to make homework an effective learning tool. And there are many ways to increase the homework completion rate in your classes.

In my ebook on teaching strategies I have an entire chapter devoted to the subject of homework. You can get more information here: http://www.teaching-teacher.com

Hope that helps,
Adam Waxler

Internet can be a great tool for students and teachers. For algebra you can use this site:
