I will shortly be starting to teach Chemistry 20 and Chemistry 30 in the same period. My plan is to make up an assortment of lessons for the students to do on their own. The lessons will be divided into three different categories which are based on the amount of time that it takes to complete. Category A will be the basic definitions and questions, while category C will be research projects and posters, etc. Has anyone ever tried this, and if so do you have any tips? For those of who you haven't tried it, does it sound feasible?

How do you decide which students do the more rigorous assignments?

You may correct me if I am wrong. It appears that the assignments will not be assigned to students according to ability. All three categories (A, B, C) are suitable for all students. The divisions appear in the time it will take to complete each assignment. For instance: A -- assignments will take a relatively short amount of time to complete and may be assigned daily. B -- assignments will take longer than A assignments but not as long as C assignments and may be assigned once a week. C -- assignments will take a large amount of time and may include a lot of research and preparation time. These assignments would be assigned oonce a month or once a quarter.

Go to http://help4teachers.com/samples.htm. I'm not sure if the science samples would work as written, but they should give you some ideas to help create your own units.

I REALLY recommend Dr. Nunley's book to everyone, too!

Yea, that's how I'll be doing it? The students will need to choose a certain amount of assignments from each section. This means that not all students will be working on the same thing at the same time.
