View Full Version : English-Listening & Speaking Game-Any ideas?
Hi my name is Zilé and I am a second year student, studying BEdECE.
I'm looking for some examples of GAMES for an English class. The games are supposed to help develop students' listening and speaking skills! I'm aiming at kindy, gr1, 2 and 3. ANY IDEAS?

Hi Zile, I am an ESL Kindergarten teacher in Taiwan and have found English teaching games as a VERY fun and effective way to enhance listening and verbal skills. One game my kids love is SWAT. You, the teacher, put picture cards face up (not matching ones like memory.) Describe a card "I am looking for the card with a girl riding a bike." The kids have to process what you have described, identify it, be the first one to slap it (swat it), and say " I have the card with a girl riding a bike." You can make up any version of this game. You can make it as little or as competitive as you want too. Competition is often good incentive. We sometimes have teams and tally up the points over longer periods of time...a day or even a week. Hope this helps!

Hi,
This game can be incorporated into every subject area! It's called "I have, who has".
I used this with my inclusion 3rd grade class to go over "Romona Quimby, Age 9".
The teacher hands out index cards. She asks the first "Who has" question Each index card has an "I have" statement and a "Who has..." question. For example: Teacher asks "Who has the name of the main character in the story?" Student with correct index card says "I have Romona Quimby is the main character in the story. The student then reads his "who has" question: Who has her best friend? The students need to look at their "I have" statements to see if they have the correct answer. The student with the correct answer responds by reading their "I have" statement and then asks their "Who has" question.
I've also used this with math. I ask "who has the answer to 8x8? The students look at their cards and respond accordingly.

Zile, I have also done a lot of researches on this stuff, especially on vocabulary building and spelling. I have come across one site that I think might help with your needs. Please check this site out, http://www.vocabularylearningresources.net/GradeSchool.html . It has a lot of resources for vocabulary building and other English learning resources for grade school that you can use for your class. I hope this helps.
