Have you heard of Hands On Equations? It is a great program that helps students learn algebra. I am also a 7th grade math teacher and the program has done wonders in my classroom for attitudes, grades, homework being turned in, and the kids love it. It uses manipulatives to help them understand how to find the answer to and equation. It is so great. It comes with student materials, teacher materials, lesson plan books, and the student classwork sheets, as well as additional work sheets that can be used as HW. If you are interested, let me know... I love it

mabey u could have read a book and then do a report on the book.
or u could have them do some research on the computer or in a book about a certain place and have them do a report about it.
some books: Ruby Holler, Black Beauty, The Giver, The Flight of the Iguana. those are some good books

Although I am an experienced teacher, I found out last week I will be teaching seventh grade math next year(a change from science). Therefore, reading this thread with some of the various ideas gave me something to add to my "bag of tricks". In the past, I have used algebra tiles for older students that worked quite well for about 50% of the class. The rest did not seem to need the manipulatives. A book I found helpful for examples and practice is called "When will I ever need this?" and is arranged by occupation and math topic with hundreds of practical examples from "real life" For fun, I also have a book called "math wizardry" but that is more a source of gee whiz demonstrations for teachers or extra credit ideas. I am looking forward to trying out some of the websites the various users have listed. Speaking of websites, there is also a webquest for planning a pizza party that would be applicable to 7th grade math.

Hi there! I am moving from teaching 4th grade Math to 7th grade Math. There is no money for new text books, and I have used the Everyday Math program for 2 years. This is a very hands on, problem solving way of teaching rather than a traditional approach. Does anyone have any good supplimental resources that you like? I would like to look into the Hands-on-Equations that someone mentioned. Where can I get more info on this?

Thanks!

I use cards alot to teach operations with integers
red is negative black is positive and you can define the rules for the game
pick an operation
face cards are worth ten
the student who gives the correct answer first gets to keep the cards
if its a tie they keep going with another pair until a clear winner is determined
lots of computation and they repeat cuz its fun

www.edhelper.com has lots of printables available for grades k-12. I have been using this for a couple of years now to help out with extra activities for homeschooled children. There is a fee of $39.95 a year for full access to the site. It is well worth the investment each year because there are many activities on each grade level--- and once a child has mastered one skill level, you can advance to the next grade level for more challenging activities.

I do an original game project each year. I've used it with upper elementary and middle school ages. I'd be happy to send a copy of the assignment and rubric as well as some ideas on how to get started. It culminates in a game night with families... but you wouldn't have to do that part. I find that it really ignites the kids and they're excited to come to math class.

Check out the website digitallessons.com. It has great activities and lesson plans ready to use that will engage your students, all designed by a middle school teacher. He saved my class from being book driven.

Enjoy

There is a product called the Math Meters.

They've got incrementally developing questions, parallel forms for use with cooperative structures, writing in math, etc etc.
