Is anybody interested in having your students correspond with people involved directly with Hurricane Katrina?
I'm a college-level instructor and have students ranging from 17-60, but they all need practice with their writing skills. All of these students were impacted in some manner by Hurricane Katrina. Some lost their homes, some lost relatives, and all of them have felt the impact since the hurricane. We are located just outside of Baton Rouge and the whole atmosphere and conditions have changed since Katrina.
Possibly...rather than actually having a correspondence...my students could write to your class describing their experiences. That way your children can hear accounts first hand but you don't run the risk of corresponding with adults, which I know can be a touchy matter.
Let me know if anybody is interested! :)

Dear NORA,
Hello from Turkey.I’m an English teacher at a private primary school in Turkey. I live in Kusadasi where is on the west coast of Turkey. It ‘s a lovely, small town with a lot of historical places in a city called Aydın.
This school year we want to start a project such as inviting a group of students to our school and placing them in the houses of our parents who have children at the same age and sex( if you want ) as your student.
These students will have social and cultural activities ( different cities, museums, cinemas, discos suitable for their ages, visiting Virgin Mary/Ephesus…..etc ) with the familiesAnd also our students will come to your country. The students will pay only 150 pounds for the arrangements and their passport ,plane tickets and visas (if necessary)expenses. At the same time I have students at a private primary school. I am the head of English department. They can be all penpals. Just tell me the age group or the class level you would like to have.IT'll be pleasure for us to cope with you.
If you are interested in this project I’ll give you all the other information you require.
My mail address : www.nurdanicel@yahoo.com
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards.

We are studying about hurricanes in my science classes. We have discussed Katrina and the damage and devastation it has caused. I would be interested in having some letters that I can read and discuss in class and that we could possibly respond to. My classes are made up of 7th and 8th grade middle school students. We are located in a suburb in Pennsylvania about 20 miles south of Pittsburgh.
Thanks,
Linda

I would be interested in having my class communicate with some of your students about the hurricane and how it impacted the lives of those involved. I teach both science and English in a small private school in Washington State. Sometimes things that happen so far away from us, though they are still in the United States, can seem almost unreal. Hearing the reality would benefit my students. Please contact me at debbys@arlingtonchristianschool.org
Thanks!

Hi everyone! Thanks so much, "unregistered" (whoever you are!) :), for posting information about the Amazing Kids! PenPals for Hurricane Survivors program.
I just wanted to clarify: the link you posted is not the correct one. (It is missing the "l" at the end of "html"...
The correct link is: http://www.amazing-kids.org/AKPenPals.html
The purpose of the program is to help students who were affected by the hurricanes to find a new friend and pen pal "buddy," someone with whom they can share their experiences, thoughts and feelings, so they feel less alone and afraid in their new surroundings. We hope it will help them with their emotional recovery needs, once their immediate physical needs have been met.
The response to the program has been incredible! :) We now have thousands of students registered to be pen pals from across the U.S. and from several other countries.
We are inviting teachers (K thru 12) to register their students to become pen pals to children who are survivors of the hurricanes. We also welcome teachers with displaced students enrolled in their classrooms to register those students who would like a new friend and pen pal their own age.
Please note that there is no registration deadline. We will be taking new registrations on an ongoing basis, indefinitely. We know many displaced students may not be ready for a pen pal quite yet; we want them to know we are here for them, if and when they are interested in finding a pen pal.
We are also looking for teachers and others who wish to volunteer to help with spreading the word about the program in their local school districts, or who would like to help with the matching process in their local area.
Please feel free to email me with any questions: info@amazing-kids.org.
Thanks again for your support and interest!

My third grade classroom is studying the devestation of natural disasters and I am wondering if there is anyone in the Louisiana or Texas area who has a lower level classroom that we could connect as penpals with. My children are all exceptional in their writing skills and would love to correspond and help with students on thier grade level who have been directly effected by this disaster. If so we are located in New Jersey with two third grade classes that have twenty students each. You can contact me at Sweetpeace24@hotmail.com if you are interedted or for more info.
Thank You
