I'm having a hard time keeping my art 1 class (grade levels 9-12) going and don't know what to do with the ones that are done or rush through a project and then the others who are working hard are rushed if I go on. Help, any suggestions?

The students should not rush because they will not get a good grade. It is the student grade if the student just rush through. If the student is done they should read a book not to talk to there friends or to the class. You should give the student 2 days or more.
I have found that if I go ahead and assign the next project or two the students will be able to continue working. Also if you give the students a rubric of what they will be graded on for the project at hand they might slow down and work a bit more skillfully.

I too think the rubric is a great tool to slow down the students. There is always the research, in the classroom, on the artist or subject learned in the art project, or I like the anti-coloring book. There are many subjects in the book that you can dictate how the "picture is to be done", IE. stippling, cross hatching, non-dominate hand, upside down (Drawing on the right side of the brain.)... the options are endless. There is always great computer software out there that will imitate what can be created by hand, Corel Painter. This program is not really expensive and in the past has been given to you when you purchase a graphics pad.
Good Luck!

My students have a sketch book assignment due every friday (as homework). For example this weeks assignment is 4 drawings using hatching and crosshatching. If they are done with a project early they may work on their sketchbook assignments. If they say they are done with that I have them do an example for a younger class, or help me matt artwork to be displayed. There is always cleaning to be done in the artroom too.

Another good activity for students who finish quickly is to have them write a reflection about their work. This does a couple of things...1.) It is a way to involve the cross cir. approach(English), 2.) It helps them to become a self-reflective thinker and 3.) It can be as elaborate, or simple as you'd like. Finally, the students who don't finish early can still do this at home.
When you first start I'd suggest giving them a set number of questions to answer. Tell them you want the questions in a paragraph form though. After a few times of doing this with the same questions begin to change up the questions, add new thoughts, take other questions out, etc. Later, don't give them questions at all but still expect x# of paragraphs. As far as grading these don't make yourself crazy. Read them over and if they answered the questions give them a checkmark. If they answered them well a check plus, and not so well a check minus. Later you can even have them writing for different publications. For example, "Your art work will be displayed in _local art musuem_ write a 2 paragraph bio about yourself which includes basic facts about you and your art style and influcences." Or "Your artwork will be listed in a magazine for art collectors, write an explanation of the piece, be sure to include the genre and the symbolism used." I hope you can use these ideas in some manner. Good luck!
