What type of note(s) should I send home the first day of school? A student information sheet for parents to fill out? I want to eventually explain the subjects, homework folders, assignment books...when is it appropriate to do this?

Sooner the better! I think parents look at that stuff all at once as opposed to having it trickle in. Some time during the first week--they will also be expecting, and asking for it then. Good luck!

Write the letter in another language. This will be a great attention getter! The parents will have to translate everything you write and it's a fun game to play with them! It's almost like a treasure hunt!

Are you kidding me? This has got to be some kind of joke! If it isn't, what kind of a teacher are you?

I don't understand why you can't see the humor in doing this to the parents. I agree with the other teacher that it would be a great ice breaker to make the parents do that! I am in the process of sending the parents a letter home in another language right now!

I am a teacher and I am the one to suggest writing a letter in another language. I am shocked that you feel this way. But there will always be those old stick in the mud teachers out there. You'll probably be retiring soon.

It goes like this: Some parents will see the humor. However, other parents will not, and you will have created a problem for yourself.

I'm thinking like this: I'm a truck driver that has been on the road for the last eight hours. I drive home, and I see a letter from my kid's teacher written in Porteguese. I'm exhausted and I have no means of translating. (How would the average parent translate such a letter?) My first impressions of my kids' teacher is not very favorable, and nothing the teacher does for the rest of the year is going to change that. I will probably complain to the principal.

This has to be one of the dumbest ideas I have seen on this board. Letters are designed to communicate. Let me say that again -- COMMUNICATE.

Rule of thumb: Don't create problems that you later have to solve, or the school district may find a solution to its problem by firing you.

I seriously doubt this is a teacher. Seems to me that this site has been overrun with kids lately. The best thing to do is ignore outrageous posts. They get their kicks when people respond to them. If nobody pays any attention, they'll go play someplace else.

Agreed--just stick with a good old fashion note home. Are you having an Open House night at school soon thereafter?
