Mental math is the ability to do math without paper/pencil or a calculator by rounding or estimating. You would mostly use this math while shopping.

I use m.m. everyday. Students have a sheet with the titles of Monday to Friday at the top and each is numbered 1-10. Then, any skill I want them to know [ie.multiplying by 10 or 100, adding in their heads using families,ie 367+43=, or converting percent to decimal....anything I want them to learn and do in their heads] I have them do daily in a quick 5 minute or less m.m. drill. Often I spend a week on one concept and teach it first [or review] and then we spend the week practicing. It's great and the kids build a lot of confidence from doing it. I don't grade them, we mark together and do together after each "Quiz", so it is not high pressure. jkruks1@shaw.ca

This is interesting because, for years, I have prided myself on and, admittedly, become addicted to "beating" the store cashier to assessing the amount of change I am due from my purchase. :-0

:o I'm only starting out, but I do believe that it's particularly important to train the brain to calculate. I always believed that doing mental math was something only brainy people could do. Recently, however, I have been learning new techniques or so called tricks to do math quickly in the mind.
Sometimes when I need calculate something in my mind, I immediately revert back to my childhood days of believing that mental maths is only for brainy people. Then I have to pull myself together and say "I can do this now".
Just a little thought on the side: It's a shame that maths can be a fearful hated subject and at the other extreme a subject that can provide so much satisfaction.
This has been a bit of here and there message but just a question I'd like to ask teachers of math;
How do you try to make maths an enjoyable experience where the students are really learning are saying "we like maths"?

I took this link and it does work. It's a fun site with activities for math and language. On line games are always fun for those kids that finish everything else early.

If the teacher has the passion, the students will also. Everything you really feel the students pick up from your body language, not verbal veracity.
